BLS Initial Assessment Tutorial
Check for Responsiveness
Tap the patient on the shoulders and shout Mr. Joe are you OK? The idea here is to determine if this patient has cognitive function to respond to touch or verbal stimuli.
Call for Help
For patients who are non responsive - immediately call for help. If you are inside of a facility alert verbally shout hey Guys he is unresponsive... I'm going to check for breathing and pulse.
Check for Breathing and Pulse
When checking for breathing and pulse - use two to three fingers, not thumbs, and place them on the carotid artery. Place your head above the patients mouth with your eyes towards the chest. Look for chest rise, listen for breathing and feel for pulse (5-10sec)
